Music

Latest: Monday July 28th, 2014

I've just spent the past 3 days at the Ealing Jazz Festival - some fantastic music there coupled with really great hot summer weather, good food and lots of beer... pictures coming soon.

I'm a great fan of progressive rock, modern jazz, jazz-fusion and classical music and whenever possible, take a decent camera to gigs. Here are some of the things I like...

Also, I nearly forgot... Radiohead. But I've never been lucky enough to see them live.

Art and design

Art, design and especially architecture is something that strikes a chord with me - probably because my father was an artist specialising in architectural paintings, mostly of church interiors. So as a small child, I was dragged around various buildings all over the British Isles, which probably resulted in my developing alternative and very different tastes in architecture as I grew up! I certainly rate Liverpool's two cathdrals and those of Coventry & Guildford - all of them modern 20th century edifices - higher aesthetically & visually than some of the more run-of-the-mill, centuries-old heaps of stone I've reluctantly traipsed through as a kid.

The Open House London initiative held every September is a great way to go and see some stunning examples of architecture in the city as well as getting to see the "innards" of buildings not normally accessible to the public. (You may need to wear a hard hat and sign a liability waiver for some of these visits, such as being hoisted high above 1 Bishopsgate (next to Liverpool Street station) in a construction workers' crane cage or stooping to pass under a working refuse incinerator at the South London CHP plant). If you do go, plan your visit well in advance as you've only got 2 whole days and there are dozens of places to visit all over the Greater London area - the most I've managed to "do" in one day is 6.
